As someone who’s gone through various fashion phases of her life, I never thought I would ever discover my sense of personal style. But over time I have finally been able to settle for a style which works for me and I thought I would share some tips that helped me along the way.
1. YOU’VE GOT TO FIGURE OUT WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY
The most important aspect of finding your personal style is understanding that it is a reflection of who you are. It’s your identity. It is what tells the outside world the kind of person you are. If you’re a naturally conservative person, you probably shouldn’t convince yourself or allow anyone to convince you to wear that low cut dress with the thigh high slit.
It’s perfectly okay to find inspiration in other people’s fashion sense but always try to take it and make it your own.
2. EXAMINE THE LAW OF ATTRACTION
Ignore trends and always trust your instincts. Some of my favourite Instagrammers are always rocking wide leg trousers or midi skirts and while I absolutely love it on them, personally those styles don’t appeal to me. I prefer high-waisted shorts over trousers and I’d pick mini skirts over midi skirts any day every time. So just trust your instincts whenever you’re buying a new outfit.
3. YOUR CLOSET SHOULD BE YOUR CLOSEST ALLY
Don’t be afraid to get rid of stuff you don’t want/would never actually wear. I try to do closet clean out about once in three months because guess what? Personal style isn’t unchanging, it’s dynamic and it changes constantly. Unless it’s something really special, there’s no reason to hang on to clothes. You should always try to refresh and refine your closet to reflect the person that you are at this particular moment and if you’re not a fan of trashing clothes or giving them away, you could just store them somewhere else. I might not like midi dresses today but tomorrow I could always change my mind.
4. YOU’VE GOT TO WALK IT LIKE YOU TALK IT
Forget sunglasses, jewellery and bags, the best accessory you can have is your confidence and if you don’t feel like a million bucks in your outfit, maybe it’s just not your style. You have to realise that the way you dress is your way and yours only, you might be taking inspiration from someone else but then make it yours and own it.
Finally, know that it’s perfectly okay to not have a particular style set. Some people are drawn to different styles depending on the kind of headspace their in, this doesn’t mean you don’t have your own personal style, it just means your style is versatile and that’s fun. Basically as long as you are comfortable, you’re doing great babes. 💛
